How much money is spent on food in Bulgaria and other countries?

Picodi.com's team of analysts reviewed statistics from 105 countries and calculated how much money people spend on food worldwide.

The collected data shows that, depending on the country, food expenditures can vary from a few percent to more than half of consumer spending. For example, less than a tenth of household expenditures on food and non-alcoholic beverages is spent in countries such as the United States (6.71% of household expenditure), Singapore (8.41% of household expenditure), the United Kingdom (8.71% of household expenditure), Ireland (9.21% of household expenditure), and Switzerland (9.91% of household expenditure).
In this ranking, Bulgaria ranked 42nd out of 105 countries, with food and non-alcoholic beverages accounting for 19.31% of expenditure. This result is similar to that of Latvia (19.31%) and Kuwait (also 19.31%).
Among the countries included in the ranking, the highest percentage of expenditure on food is observed in Nigeria, Myanmar and Kenya – 59%, 56.6% and 56.1%, respectively.
How much is spent on food in European countries?
The highest food expenditure relative to all expenditure in European countries is observed in Ukraine with 41.61% of expenditure and 92nd place, followed by Moldova with 41.11% of expenditure and 90th place, North Macedonia with 33.31% of expenditure and 79th place, Belarus with 32.11% of expenditure and 76th place, Bosnia and Herzegovina with 301% of expenditure and 71st place, Russia with 291% of expenditure and 68th place and Turkey with 27.31% of expenditure and 62nd place.
The highest food costs in America are found in the United States ($256 per month), while the lowest food costs can be found in Venezuela ($4 per month).
Methodology
The report used the latest household food and non-alcoholic beverage consumption data from Euromonitor and official government websites. Average exchange rates from Google Finance for July 2023 were used for currency conversion.
